Why reupholster instead of replacing
Older furniture is often built better than its modern equivalent, solid timber frames, proper springing, construction meant to last decades rather than a few years. Reupholstery lets you keep that foundation and update everything around it, new fabric, fresh padding where it's needed, and a frame that's been checked over and repaired if required.
It's also the option for a piece with genuine sentimental value, or one whose proportions and shape simply suit your room in a way nothing new quite does.
What's involved
Reupholstery is a hands on, skilled trade, and one with fewer genuine experts left in Sydney than there used to be.
The process starts with stripping the piece back to its frame. From there, the frame itself is checked and repaired if needed, springs and webbing are assessed and replaced where they've lost their bounce, and padding is topped up or renewed. Only once that foundation is sound does the piece get reupholstered in your chosen fabric.
It's a slower process than buying off the shelf, but it's the reason a reupholstered piece can go on to last another few decades rather than a few years.

Choosing fabric for a reupholstery project
A reupholstered piece is a chance to change the whole character of a room, or to bring a favourite chair back in a fabric closer to your current style.
A stand alone armchair is a great place to be bold, a rich colour or a directional pattern that would be too much across an entire sofa can be exactly right on a single chair. For a piece getting everyday use, like a well loved sofa or set of dining chairs, a hardwearing fabric with a bit of texture will wear better and hide daily life more forgivingly than a delicate weave.
